Vintage Omega De Ville

Omega's own vintage database lists 356 De Ville references, from 1962 to 1999: 130 hand-wound, 80 automatic, 140 quartz and 3 tuning fork, with 3 not given. The hand-wound 620 and 625 are inside 83 of them. Find your reference below and you have your movement, your metal and the parts that fit it.

6201962–197753 references, hand-wound51 parts listed 6251967–198142 references, hand-wound66 parts listed 7111962–197618 references, automatic111 parts listed 6711966–197210 references, automatic98 parts listed 4851966–197314 references, small hand-wound56 parts listed 4841964–196812 references, small hand-wound57 parts listed 6611963–197512 references, small automatic68 parts listed 10021969–19799 references, automatic, date100 parts listed

Years are the years Omega's database gives for the references; a reference listed as “620 or 625” counts under both. Parts counts are the part numbers in our database for each calibre, from Omega's GF 620 catalogues and, for the 625, Omega's 2013 technical guide. Tap a calibre for its parts. Spelled DeVille or De Ville, it is the same collection; the 1959 to 1964 Seamaster De Ville has its own guide.

Two marked automatic, three not marked at all. Omega's database marks MD 111.0107 and MD 111.0113 automatic, but the 620's designation in GF 620-5 carries no RA, Omega's mark for an automatic, and none of the 625's 66 listed parts is an automatic part. 511.0263, 511.0264 and ST 511.0427 have no movement type in Omega's data; all three list the 620. Look at the movement: no rotor means hand-wound.

Source: Omega's vintage database, as held in the reference lookup, all 356 De Ville references. Send it and I'll check it.

620 or 625? Two movements, not one

Omega's database lists 12 De Villes as “620 or 625”, and the two share a 17.50 mm size, so they read like one movement in two versions. The part numbers say otherwise. The 620 references run 1962–1976; the 625-only references run 1971–1981.

3 also listed for the 620 3 more carry a 620 number 40 carry a 625 number 4 from other calibres (1010, 1120, 6211) 6 screws 1 reverse-thread screw, 2729 9 jewels The 66 part numbers Omega's 2013 technical guide (TG-19-C-137) lists for the 625, one square each, checked against the 620's 51 in GF 620-5.

Only 3 of the 625's 66 part numbers are also in the 620's list: the roller 620.1324, the winding stem 620.1106 and the balance cap jewel 440.1342. The main plate (625.1000), the 3/4 plate bridge (625.1002), the train, the escape wheel and pallet fork, the complete balance (625.1327), the barrel and mainspring and the keyless works all carry 625 numbers. The 625 also takes three stems that carry 620 numbers but are not in the 620's own list: 620.1125, long, and the two-piece 620.1159 and 620.1160. So on a “620 or 625” reference, read the calibre on the movement before you buy a part, and hunt by the part number. The parts finder lists every 625 part, and every 620 part.

Two crown wheel core screws. The 625's list carries 2729, reverse (left-hand) thread: it undoes clockwise. It also carries 2559, right-hand. Know which one is in yours before you turn it.

The 625's cannon pinion and hour wheel each come in four heights, h0 to h3: cannon pinions 625.1218 to 625.1221 (1.90 to 2.65 mm) and hour wheels 625.1231 to 625.1234 (1.06 to 1.81 mm). The technical guide gives the 625 21,600 beats, 17 jewels, a 52° lift angle and 30 hours on a full wind. GF 620-5 gives the 620 19,800 beats and 17 jewels.

The calibres, from the factory catalogue

Omega's catalogues print each calibre with a short designation. RA is automatic, SC is centre seconds, PC is shock protection, CAL is the date, CALD is day and date, CORR is the corrector, INST is the instant date change, STS is the stop-second and AM is antimagnetic.

Is it gold?

108 of the 356 references are solid gold in Omega's records, and 9 are sterling silver. The letters in front of the reference tell you which:

An 18k case is stamped 750 and a 14k case 585; sterling silver is 925. On a plated case, base metal showing at the lug edges means the plate has worn through. Gold or plated? covers every mark, and Weigh your Omega turns a kitchen-scale weight into a gold value.

Is your De Ville all original?

The reference, the calibre and the dial have to agree, and on a “620 or 625” reference the movement decides which parts fit. Six photos and the weight, and I check them against Omega's own records and put it in writing. Nothing to pay until I confirm the photos can answer it.

What it's worth

Three numbers matter: what the same reference with the right calibre actually sold for, what the parts would bring, and, on a solid gold case, the gold. Use the “What they sold for” links on this page rather than asking prices. Vintage Omega prices gives the bands by model, and What's my Omega worth? explains all three.

Dating one

The serial is on the movement; the serial number lookup gives the year band. It should land in or after the year the reference appears above. In Omega's records the De Ville's tuning-fork references start in 1972 and its quartz references in 1976.

Questions people ask

What movement is in my Omega De Ville?

It depends on the reference. In Omega's database the hand-wound 620 and 625 are in 83 of the 356 references, the automatic 711 and 671 in 28, and from 1976 quartz takes over: 140 references. The reference inside the caseback tells you which one should be there.

What year is my Omega De Ville?

Omega's records date the De Ville references from 1962 to 1999. The serial on a mechanical movement gives the year band, and it should land in or after the year of the reference.

Is my Omega De Ville gold?

Read the letters in front of the reference. Omega lists BA as 18k solid yellow gold, BC as 18k solid white gold and BD as 14k. RS is sterling silver. DA, DD and DF are steel with a solid gold bezel, DL is steel with a gold-plated bezel, MD and the other gold-plated codes are plate, and ST is steel.

What is the difference between the Seamaster De Ville and the De Ville?

In Omega's records they are two collections. The Seamaster De Ville holds 16 references from 1959 to 1964. The De Ville is its own collection from 1962, with 356 references to 1999.

Will a 620 part fit my Omega 625?

Rarely. Of the 66 part numbers Omega's 2013 technical guide gives the 625, only 3 are in the 620's list in GF 620-5: the roller 620.1324, the winding stem 620.1106 and the balance cap jewel 440.1342. Read the calibre on the movement and search by the part number.

Is there a service manual for the Omega 625?

Yes. Omega's technical guide TG-19-C-137 (2013) covers the 625: 21,600 beats, 17 jewels, a 52° lift angle and 30 hours on a full wind, with its parts. For the 620, GF 620-5 lists the parts. Both are in the Watch Breaker database.

Why are chronographs and Ladymatics filed under De Ville?

Omega's database files them there: 6 chronograph references on the 320, 321, 860, 861 and 930, 2 references named Ladymatic and an Electronic pocket watch, ST 198.1742. It also files 3 Swiss Collection references named De Ville and 5 US Collection references named Seamaster De Ville; those are in the reference lookup.
