Vintage Omega Constellation
Omega's chronometer line from 1952 — the watch with the observatory on the back. Every one left the factory with a certified movement, and across thirty years that movement changed five times, the case went from round to pie-pan-and-dogleg to the "C-shape", and the metal went from solid gold to gold-capped to steel. Which generation you have, and what the case is made of, decide the money. Here is how to read one.
The five generations
The Constellation's name never changed, but the movement did, and the movement is what the parts market and the collector market are both paying for. Learn the five and you can place any vintage Constellation within a few years from the caseback off.

These figures come from Watch Breaker's database of Omega's own GF 620 spare-parts catalogues — the numbers a watchmaker would have used to order parts. Size and height are how you tell a 354 from a 505 with the caseback off; the jewel count is stamped on the movement and should match.

"Parts catalogued" is the number of part-to-calibre entries loaded so far from the catalogues — a measure of how deep the parts supply runs, which matters when you own one that needs a rotor axle. The 564 tab is next in the capture queue.
Dial and case cues, at a glance
- The pie-pan dial: twelve facets, with the outer ring stepping down like an inverted pie tin. 1952 to the mid-1960s. Under a raking light the facets are unmistakable; a flat dial with "pie pan" in the listing title is a flat dial.
- The star: an applied gold star above 6 o'clock, under CONSTELLATION. Should be applied, not printed, on every vintage men's Constellation.
- The text: OMEGA · Automatic · Chronometer · Officially Certified · Constellation (with the star), in that spirit if not always that order. From around 1969 "Officially Certified" drops and the dial reads Constellation Chronometer. A 1950s dial reading only "Chronometer" is wrong.
- The hands: dauphine or faceted baton hands with lume on the pie-pans; flat batons on the C-shapes. Alpha hands are wrong. The hands' lume should have aged like the dial's.
- Dogleg lugs (a kink in the lug seen from the side) mark the 1956–66 cases — the 2852 through 168.005 references. Straight lugs are earlier; the C-shape is later.
- The caseback medallion: the observatory under eight stars, in relief on gold and capped backs, stamped on steel. Missing, worn flat, or engraved over is a case that has been swapped or ruined.
- Crown and crystal: signed Ω crown, and a crystal with a tiny Ω at the centre on many examples — good signs, but both are service parts and prove nothing on their own.
Gold, gold-capped or steel — the biggest swing
The same 168.005 pie-pan was sold in stainless steel, in gold-capped steel, and in solid 14k or 18k gold, and from across a room they are the same watch. They are not the same money. The capped case is a thick gold shell over a steel body with a steel caseback — much more gold than plating, but not solid — and it is by far the most common way a "gold" Constellation turns up.
- Solid gold: a fineness stamp inside the caseback (750 / 18K; 585 / 14K on some markets, notably the US), Omega's BA material code before the reference, and a gold caseback with the medallion in relief. The whole case is gold; so is the back.
- Gold-capped: the caseback is steel — often marked Acier Inoxydable or Stainless Steel, sometimes with a small stamped mark noting the cap — and the medallion is on steel. No fineness stamp on the case body. Look at the lug tips and the case edges for a seam or for steel showing through.
- Steel: ST code, obviously steel, and the most collectible of the pie-pans in the current market for exactly that reason.
If the stamps are unreadable or you can't get the back off, a kitchen scale settles it: weigh the case dry and in water and the density answers. Solid gold reads far above steel and capped, and no capped case can fake it.
References by generation
The reference is stamped inside the caseback. Vintage Constellations use two formats: a plain four- or five-digit number through the 1950s and early 1960s (2852, 14381, 14900), then the three-digit-point-three-digit style from about 1962 (167.005, 168.005), with the four-digit suffix arriving at the end of the decade (168.0056). These are the pairings collectors have documented; the calibre inside your case should be the one for its reference.

A 168.005 with a 1012 in it, or a 14900 with a 565, is a movement swap — genuine parts, not an original watch. The full check.
Dating one
Three clocks, and they should agree. The reference format gives the decade (plain number = 1950s to early 60s; 16x.00x = 1962 on; 168.00xx = 1969 on). The calibre gives the generation from the table above. The serial number on the movement gives the year — run it through the serial lookup and the year band should sit inside the calibre's production run and the reference's era. When the three disagree, the watch has been rebuilt, and the report on the movement is the one to trust.
What it's worth
Broad bands for 2026, in US dollars, for honest examples with original dials that run. The Constellation is the most redialed vintage Omega there is, so the dial does more to the number than anything except the metal.

These are steering bands, not an appraisal. How the three values — watch, parts, metal — work, and why a ruined gold Constellation can be worth more than a clean capped one.
What goes wrong with them
- Redials. Pie-pans especially. The facets make refinishing hard to do well: printing that sits unevenly across the facets, a star that is printed rather than applied, "Chronometer Officially Certified" in a font that is slightly too heavy, text off-centre relative to the facets.
- Over-polished cases. The dogleg lugs lose their edge; the C-shape loses its crisp brushed surfaces. A pie-pan with rounded-off lugs is a lesser watch however good the dial.
- Worn gold cap at the lug tips and case edges. It does not polish out — there is steel underneath.
- Movement swaps. A 561 case with a 565 or a 1012 in it. Cheap donor Genèves and Seamasters supply the parts; the reference table is the check.
- Married casebacks. The medallion back is the valuable half of the case; watch for a caseback whose reference or wear does not match the case body.
- Rotor bearing wear on the 1000-series calibres — a scraping rotor — and a dropped rotor on early bumpers that have been run with dead bumper springs.

What is an Omega Constellation pie pan?
A Constellation with the twelve-sided faceted dial whose outer ring slopes down like an inverted pie tin, used from 1952 into the mid-1960s on the bumper, 500-series and 550-series calibres. The most collected Constellation dial, and the most refinished.
Are all vintage Omega Constellations chronometers?
Yes — the Constellation was Omega's chronometer line and every mechanical one carried a certified movement: 354, 505, 551/561, 564, 751, 1001 and their successors. The dial says so.
How can I tell if my Constellation is solid gold or gold-capped?
Inside the caseback. Solid gold has a fineness stamp (750 / 18K, or 585 / 14K) and the BA code; capped has a steel back with no fineness stamp. When in doubt, the water-displacement test on a kitchen scale settles it.
What does the medallion on the back mean?

How much is a vintage Omega Constellation worth?
Steel or capped pie-pan with an original dial and running: low thousands. Solid 18k gold: mid thousands and up. C-shape 564: around a thousand. 1970s 1011: mid-to-high hundreds. Redialed: roughly half of any of those.
Is a vintage Omega Constellation a good investment?
Original steel pie-pans have appreciated steadily for a decade, and the C-shapes look cheap for what's inside them. But the market prices originality above all, and most Constellations offered for sale are not original. Buy the dial and the movement, not the name.
